Relying on two first-level disciplines of water conservancy engineering, geological resources and geological engineering, the institute of hydrology and water resources undertakes the training, teaching and scientific research of undergraduate, master and doctoral students in hydrology and water resources engineering, groundwater science and engineering related majors.

In 1980, China University of Mining and Technology began to recruit undergraduate students majoring in hydrogeology and engineering geology. Hydrogeology and engineering geology was approved as the authorization point for master's degree in 1990. In 1998, it merged with the terrestrial hydrology major to form the undergraduate program of hydrology and water resources engineering. In 2003, the master program of hydrology and water resources was established with the approval of the ministry of education, and was listed in the enrollment plan of CUMT. In 2008, the undergraduate program of hydrology and water resources engineering was approved as a brand specialty in Jiangsu Province. In 2010, it was approved as a first-level master's degree program in hydraulic engineering. In 2012, a second-level discipline of groundwater science and engineering was established.

The department of hydrology and water resources has 17 teachers, including 4 professors and 6 associate professors, 14 of whom have doctoral degrees. We presided over the completion of two national 973 program projects, one national 75th scientific and technological research project, one national natural fund key project, 15 national natural fund projects, one key fund project of the ministry of education, and 3 natural science fund projects in Jiangsu Province. In addition, we have won 2 second prizes of national science and technology progress awards and more than 20 provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards. We published 9 monographs and 3 textbooks, and published over 300 academic papers, among which more than 50 were included in SCI and more than 100 in EI.

The institute of hydrology and water resources cooperate with multiple platforms, such as national key laboratory of coal resources and safe mining and deep rock and soil mechanics and underground engineering state key laboratory, the national development and reform commission, the basis of mine water prevention and control technology research laboratory and analysis and test center of China university of mining, China university of mining resources and earth sciences at teaching experiment center, etc. Therefore, we have advanced experimental facilities and research conditions, and engage in basic theory and application research in the field of hydrology and water resources. It has formed a number of research directions with obvious characteristics of mine water disaster prevention and control, and achieved a number of landmark achievements. Main research directions are:

(2) water resources evaluation and management

(3) water environment and water ecology

(4) hydrological and physical process simulation and prediction

(5) environmental change and water security

(6) engineering hydrogeology

(7) numerical simulation of groundwater
